Dalai Lama’s Cat and The Art of Purring by David Mitchell: Book Review

This book was first suggested to me by my therapist when we were working on the principles of mindfulness.

Though it’s not a self help book talking solely about what you must and mustn’t do, it very beautifully covers the many aspects of living a happy life from a Buddhist point of you through a story narrated by His Holiness’s Cat.

A glimpse from the book

It’s a very light yet uplifting book by David Mitchell and you do not need to read The Dalai Lama’s Cat, this books prequel to understand this fully. It’s okay.

The book is set in the town of McLeodganj in India. Dalai Lama’s cat is set on an ambition to find out the art of purring or happiness while he is away from the town.

The importance of consciousness over conscious mind, the feeling of happiness without actually having attained it, the importance of impermanence and suffering in one’s life are some of the things that his cat, The snow lion discovers on her own while strolling through The Himalayan Book Cafe, eavesdropping on monks, owners, cooks and others talking who so lovingly admire her wherever she goes.

An image of my desk!

It’s a beautiful page turner, making you smile, laugh and blush at many instances through the story.

Having been introduced to the principles of living in the moment and not so much in the past and future, I highly advise you to explore Mindfulness yourself. It works wonders if I am allowed to say!

Budhha certainly gave us a beautiful gift in his teachings.

The two books that helped me understand mindfulness better.

Highly recommended!

P.S- I am working on a story from a certain someone from my hometown, her story of courage, love, strength and endurance is definitely worth reading. Wait for it. 🤗
